Annie's Paramount Steakhouse has renovated their overflow upstairs dining room into a higher end eatery with its own menu and separate bar area. Unlike their "downstairs" menu, the food selection is limited to 6-8 appetizers and 4-6 entrees, but the quality is decidedly better. Wine selections by the glass and bottle are also tastier.
It gets thumbs up for an innovative interior (it feels like a mid-century modern speakeasy), more interesting food, and the same friendly Annie's service. My only "beef" about the place is that the prices seem 20-25% higher than they should be for the experience. At $32 for the best steak, I should be in Georgetown on M Street or at least have an outside view.
The majority of regulars downstairs will no doubt shun upstairs in favor of familiar $9.99 entries, but I think it was smart of the owners to try something different and potentially grab a newer (dare I say younger?) client base.
